Getting Sick as a Solopreneur Is a Reality Check

Greetings, greetings, greetings,

Big Win of the Day: I Finished an Entire Bowl of Soup

I have been sick for the past few days. The kind where getting out of bed requires negotiation. My husband was traveling, and as a solopreneur, this is when reality shows up very clearly.

When you get sick as a solopreneur, there is no backup.

You come out of bed and see unanswered emails. Decisions waiting to be made. Customers to follow up with. Orders to send for shipment. The business does not slow down just because your body does. There is nothing shiny about this part of entrepreneurship. No one is covering your shift. No one is stepping in to β€œjust handle it.”

Everything waits for you.

What struck me this time was the contrast.

While I had no backup at work, I did have backup in life.

My 17-year-old took care of my 12-year-old. Practices happened. Rides were given. Food was bought. The household kept running without me. And that felt like a quiet milestone I had not fully appreciated before.

Years ago, this would not have been possible. When my kids were younger, getting sick felt impossible because both life and work depended entirely on me. My sister in law once said, β€œI can’t wait to get sick when my kids are independent.” There is so much wisdom and hope packed into that one sentence πŸ™‚

That first bowl of soup I managed to finish felt symbolic. Not because soup is remarkable, but because it marked the moment I realized how uneven support can be. Life can evolve to give you space. Business, especially as a solopreneur, often does not.

This is my second to last blog of the year, and it felt important to say this out loud.

Solopreneurship is not just about freedom and flexibility. It is also about responsibility with no redundancy. It is about showing up even when you are tired, sick, or depleted, because there is no one else to do it.

And still, brighter days are ahead.

Not because the work disappears, but because over time you build systems, resilience, and perspective. You learn to celebrate small wins. Even finishing a bowl of soup.

Cheers to every solopreneur holding both the business and the human behind it.
