Beiersdorf Just Did What We Did Two Years Ago. And I’m Thrilled About It

Greetings, skin microbiome enthusiasts!

Last week, a 140-year-old skincare company named Beiersdorf announced a new product line called Probiom8. It’s a probiotic skincare approach for acne-prone skin.

And I had to sit with that news for a few days before writing about it. Not because I was upset. But because I was trying to figure out exactly what I felt.

The answer is: excited. And also, validated in a way I didn’t expect.

Let me explain.

We Got There First

Here’s the honest truth. Fafabiotic figured this out years before Beiersdorf’s announcement. We built Fresh Smoothing and Fresh Hydrating Probiotic Lotion on the exact principle they’re now promoting: support your skin microbiome instead of disrupting it.

We tested it. We refined it. We got a 40% repeat customer rate because the science actually works.

The difference? We did it with a handful of people and money we bootstrapped ourselves. Beiersdorf did it with 22,000 employees, decades of research partnerships, and a budget I can’t even fathom. Their launch included 7 clinical studies, 3,000+ participants, 226 dermatologists evaluating the approach.

So yes. We got there first. But they just got there too. And that matters more than you might think.

Why Their Success Is Actually Our Opportunity

Here’s the thing about education. The skincare industry runs on it. Or rather, it should.

The problem is, real education costs money. Serious money. It takes time. It requires you to say the same thing over and over until people actually understand WHY probiotics matter for skin. Why one living lotion replaces five products. Why cell viability for 30 days changes everything.

That’s hard to fit into a 15-second Instagram ad. We know. We’ve tried.

Beiersdorf has the budget to run global campaigns, publish clinical data in journals, speak at dermatology conferences, and educate consumers on a scale we simply cannot match. And when they do that work, something interesting happens: the entire market shifts.

Consumers start learning about the microbiome. Dermatologists start talking about it. The beauty industry changes its conversation from “disruption” to “support.”

When that happens, our job becomes infinitely easier.

Right now, I’m explaining probiotic skincare to people who’ve never heard the term. In two years, Beiersdorf will have done that work for us. The market will be warmed up. The conversation will have shifted. And we’ll be the company that’s been saying this the whole time, with 18 years of microbial science behind it.

That’s not a threat. That’s a gift.

The Thing I’m Watching

But here’s what matters to me, and I want to be clear about it.

Beiersdorf’s approach uses TopiC.A, a probiotic technology that supports, rather than disrupts, the skin microbiome. They’re keeping cells alive. That’s the right approach. Although I am not sure if they keep the cells active.

Not every company entering this space will do it correctly. Some will use dead probiotics and call it innovation (it’s not, it’s just marketing). Some will claim benefits without real viability data. Some will confuse “probiotic branding” with actual living biology.

My hope, as more companies enter this space, is that they do it with integrity. With live, active cells. With real clinical data. With a genuine commitment to keeping those cells viable long enough to actually work on skin.

Because dead probiotics aren’t probiotics.

What This Means For Us

I didn’t start Fafabiotic to be the only company doing this. I started it because 18 years of microbial science taught me something the rest of the industry had forgotten: that working WITH biology beats fighting against it.

Now, a 140-year-old company is asking the same question we asked. And answering it the same way we did.

Does that threaten me? No. It validates us.

It tells me the market is finally ready. It tells me dermatologists get it. It tells me consumers are waking up to the fact that complexity isn’t luxury. Simplicity is.

Beiersdorf’s results? 46% of participants achieved clear or almost clear-looking skin in eight weeks.

Our repeat customer rate? 40%. People who bought once, saw results, and came back for more.

Same principle. Same science. Different scale. And honestly, I think that says everything.

Until next blog, cheers
