🔬 Rabbit hole research win! L. plantarum on acne

Greetings, Skin microbiome enthusiast,

Today, I’m excited to share a little story that highlights why I love working at the intersection of science, skincare, and real-world results.

Recently, during one of my classic rabbit-hole research sessions (you know the kind—you start with one topic and end up miles deep in a completely different direction), I came across a publication that genuinely made me smile:
“Topical Administration of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (SkinDuo™) Serum Improves Anti-Acne Properties.”

This paper stopped me in my tracks because it scientifically validated something I had hypothesized purely based on my formulation experience and understanding of microbial behavior.

When I first developed our Fresh Smoothing Probiotic Lotion at Fafabiotic, I selected live and active cells of L. plantarum for a very specific reason:  L. plantarum is an exceptionally strong anti-pathogen. In microbial science, we know it’s great at crowding out harmful bacteria and creating a healthier environment—whether in the gut, on plants, or (as I theorized) on the skin.

My thinking was simple: if L. plantarum can dominate harmful microbes in other systems, it should be able to help calm and balance acne-prone skin, where bad bacteria often cause inflammation and breakouts. so, L. plantarum on acne idea started!

And guess what?
The real-world results were incredibly encouraging. My own teenage son, who served as my very first tester, saw significant improvements. Then came more feedback from early customers: clearer skin, fewer breakouts, and a sense of skin finally finding its balance. All without heavy actives, harsh chemicals, or the typical “purge” phase that so many acne treatments involve.

Little did I know at the time, there was already a clinical study out there confirming this exact mechanism! 🎯

A Note for My European Friends

Currently, Fafabiotic is available only in the U.S. (for now!). But if you live in Europe and want to experience the benefits of L. plantarum for acne-prone skin, you can look for SkinDuo™.
It’s a topical serum that also uses L. plantarum, although it doesn’t have the soothing lotion component we include, and it comes at about twice the price of our Fresh Smoothing Probiotic Lotion.
Still, it’s a wonderful option until we can officially bring Fafabiotic across the ocean!

Final Thoughts

Moments like these remind me why I love what I do. Sometimes, intuition (gut feeling), real-world testing, and science come together beautifully.
Thank you for trusting me to bring you truly science-backed, microbiome-friendly skincare. And if you ever find yourself deep in a research rabbit hole, keep going. You never know what gems you’ll uncover.

Until next week, stay curious, stay radiant, and keep nurturing your skin microbiome!

Cheers

PS: The relevance of the cover photo to this blog? Nothing 🙂 I just love this painting of my husband and I, and like this blog, it’s just a happy story.. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum acne product
