What Is That Smell?

If you have tried Fafabiotic, chances are you paused for a second the first time you used it.

You opened the bottle.
You activated Bloom Technology.
You applied it.

And then you thought…

What is that smell?

Let’s talk about it.

First, the honest data.

About 5 percent of our customers absolutely hate the smell. They do not come back.
About 5 percent love it and say that is exactly why they trust the product.
About 90 percent say something like, β€œIt is different… but I got used to it.”

Even my husband cannot tolerate it. He supports me in everything, but this smell is not for him.

And that is okay.

So what are you actually smelling?

You are smelling living microbes.

You are smelling fermentation.

You are smelling biology.

There is no added fragrance.
There are no masking agents.
There are no β€œclean perfume blends.”
There are no chemicals added to fix or cover the scent.

What you experience is the natural aroma of the ingredients and the probiotic cultures themselves.

Customers describe it differently:

Some say it smells like sourdough starter.
Some say it smells like beer.
Some say it smells like cooked rice.

All of those descriptions make sense.

Fermentation produces organic acids and metabolic byproducts. That is part of what makes probiotics active and beneficial. And yes, those compounds have a scent.

In my previous career in agricultural biotechnology, I worked with bacteria that farmers described as smelling like cow manure or worse. Compared to that, these strains are incredibly mild and actually among the best smelling microbes I have ever formulated with.

But they still have a distinct identity.

And in the world of skincare, that is disruptive.

Because the beauty industry has trained us to expect fragrance. Floral. Citrus. Powdery. Clean. Luxurious. Sweet. Something that signals comfort.

We have been conditioned to associate scent with quality.

But in our case, scent signals authenticity.

If it smells like something alive, it is because it is.

Could we add fragrance? Yes.
Could we mask it? Absolutely.

But that would go against the entire philosophy of Fafabiotic.

We believe your skin is a biological system, not a scented surface. We believe in fewer ingredients. We believe in transparency. We believe in not insulting the intelligence of our customers.

So we chose not to hide it.

Maybe one day we will discover or engineer probiotic strains that have minimal odor. Science evolves. Formulation evolves.

But right now, this is the honest smell of living skincare.

And instead of apologizing for it, we are owning it.

If you love heavily fragranced products, Fafabiotic may not be for you.

If you are open to something that smells real, raw, and biologically active, you might just find that after a few days, the scent fades into the background and the results take center stage.

Sometimes disruption does not look like a fancy bottle.

Sometimes it smells like sourdough.

And that is perfectly fine with us.

Until next blog, Cheers, and I hope you are enjoying the image for this blog, which is what ChatGPT made for me based on what it knew of me πŸ™‚
