When Your Teen Says: “The Product Works Great, Your Marketing Sucks”

Last week, my teenage son tried to help me with TikTok. He’s a big fan of Fafabiotic (and my Fresh Smoothing Probiotic Lotion), and like most teens, he lives on TikTok. He looked at me very seriously and said:
“Mom, the product works great. Your marketing sucks.”

Ouch. But he wasn’t wrong.

Fresh Smoothing Probiotic Lotion works beautifully for acne-prone skin—my son is living proof—and there are millions of teenagers just like him who could benefit. But the truth is, reaching them is another story.


TikTok vs. Me

Everyone tells me: “If you want teenagers, you’ll find them on TikTok.” And they’re right. Around 40% of people now make their buying decisions based on social media, and TikTok is where teenagers hang out.

So I tried. I made a few videos with CapCut (thank you, ChatGPT, for showing me the app). And then—both of my kids vetoed every single one of them. Their verdict:

  • “These videos look cheap.”
  • “We don’t like watching AI stuff.”

Wait, what? I thought Gen Z loved AI. But apparently, not when it comes to TikTok videos. According to them, what TikTok loves is raw, authentic, funny, relatable content—not slick, AI-produced ads.

That was eye-opening.


Two Worlds, One Brand

Here’s what I’ve realized:

  • Teenagers need to see Fafabiotic in action—real people, real results, before-and-after skin transformations.
  • Moms are the final decision makers, especially when it comes to acne products. They need education, safety, and proof.

So I’ll keep experimenting. On TikTok, I’ll figure out how to interact with teens in their own language. On Instagram, I’ll speak directly to moms with the science and the reassurance they need.

The best part? I already know the product works. The marketing—I’ll figure that out.
